Hailstones are extremely unfavorable to farmers because they destroy a huge part of their crops. Some parts of the country have anti-theft protection, but the overall protection of all arable land in Bulgaria seems still unclear and distant in time.

Hail factors:

The presence of powerful compartment-rain clouds, reaching a height of 14 - 16 km. These clouds are made up of three main layers - a warm layer, a mixed layer and an ice peak. The hail-bearing clouds are often greenish in color. As water droplets move from the warm layer to the ice tip and back, they evaporate and the resulting vapor is deposited on ice crystals. Depending on the strength of the ascending currents in the cloud, the stronger they are, the longer the crystals remain in it and grow steadily - often reaching the size of a walnut, and in rare and extreme cases the size of an apple. As the ice chunks reach a size large enough to overcome the rising currents, they begin to fall to the ground and we observe the so-called hail.
